The Jewish Family and Community Services-East Bay LGBT refugee resettlement program is anticipating the arrival of a lesbian couple from Uganda in the next few months and has asked Kehilla to form a Welcome Group to help them as they transition to their lives here. A Welcome Group is comprised of 4-6 members who are responsible for taking the couple to various appointments, orienting them to life in the East Bay and helping with needs such as preparing a resume and finding a job. Each member of the team needs to be available one weekday each week for at least the first six weeks after the couple arrives here. After that, the time commitment may gradually lessen. The Welcome Group is supervised by staff from JFCS. The couple speaks English (an official language of Uganda). The couple has refugee status, meaning that they are eligible for various social service benefits. JFCS is responsible for arranging their initial housing. If you are interested in finding out more or joining this Welcome Group, contact Dvora Gordon at dvoragee@gmail.com.
