The Teachers of Oakland are striking starting on Thursday (2/22). Encompass Academy and Acorn Woodland Elementary, two schools on one campus in East Oakland, will be holding a solidarity school at the 81st Ave Public Library, which is also located on the same campus. At this point in time, they will be serving 60 students. They are looking for volunteers to assist in the solidarity from either 8am-12pm or 12pm-4pm. People who are not comfortable teaching or volunteering are welcome to join with the teachers on the picket line. For more information or to sign up, please contact retired Encompass Academy teacher and Kehilla community member Marlene Klein-Atwood at Mysticmadre@yahoo.com. If possible, please include 1) which days you are available either 8am-12pm or 12pm-4pm starting this Thurs 2/21 for the next week or two (hopefully won’t need that long!); 2) VERy briefly if you have any professional, childrearing or other experience with kids (ex. Yes – summer camp counselor + grandparent); 3) if you are comfortable leading a small group of kids in yoga, arts and crafts, reading stories, especially racial justice ones, team building, other ideas etc etc, and if so, if you can bring the relevant materials OR if you’d prefer to be a support person with another person who is leading, and 4) if you’d like to join the picket line instead/as well, which will be mornings in the 6:30-9 window and afternoons for a chunk of time centered around 3pm. Please also include your best contact info. THANK YOU!
