SUMMARY:IN PERSON ONLY: Erev Tisha B’av
DESCRIPTION:Monday night\, August 12th \nArrive 6:45 pm\, start at 7:00 pm\, chanting Eicha around 8:00 pm \nIN-PERSON ONLY\, in the Courtyard at Kehilla \n***See below for an online observance option \nWe grieve for Gaza. We grieve for Palestine. We grieve for Israel. We grieve for the dead. We grieve for the wounded. We grieve for the children left without parents\, and for the parents left without children. We grieve for those held hostage and those held captive. We grieve for the aid workers and the peace-seekers and builders whose labor has become rubble. We grieve for the earth burned and scarred and saturated with our siblings’ blood. \nWe need to grieve together. \nJoin Kehilla’s spiritual leaders in a reflective and expressive space to hold our grief\, in art and in song. \nThis space to hold our personal and collective mourning will move into the traditional chanting of Eicha\, the book of Lamentations\, which bewails the destruction of the first Temple\, painting vivid pictures of ancient horrors\, the likes of which we’ve seen again on October 7 and the days since in Gaza and the West Bank. Chanters:  Alex Madonik\, Natalie Boskin\, H’ Shulamit\, Binya Koatz\, and Jon Rodney. \nFor these things I weep; my eye\, my eye runs down with water\, because the comforter that should relieve my soul is far from me: my children are desolate\, because the enemy has prevailed. \n\nEicha / Lamentations 1:16\n\n  \nEntrance to the Kehilla event in the Courtyard is on Fairview Ave through the gate. An accessible entrance is through the ‘bus stop door’ on Grand Ave. \n  \n*** Join Beyt Tikkun for an online or in person observance of Tisha B’av\, Monday\, Aug 12\, from 6:30-8:30 pm.  \nCo-sponsored by Rabbis for Ceasefire and Shomeret Shalom. More information and register here. \nFor in-person attendance\, please adhere to the COVID Public Health Protocols: \nPlease read the full Kehilla COVID Public Health Protocols here (updated January 1\, 2024). \n\nAnyone experiencing ANY symptoms of potentially contagious illness should remain at home and access Kehilla events virtually.\nAll people over the age of four attending in-person Kehilla events or services are expected to be masked indoors when not eating: N95\, KN95\, KF94 or comparable masks required.\nIn keeping with our health and safety protocols\, Kehilla will provide maximum air filtration and ventilation. SUMMARY:IN-PERSON: Chevra Kadisha Film Series
DESCRIPTION:How do we\, as Jews\, approach death and dying rituals in our lives? The Chevra Kadisha\, our Burial Society\, is offering a series of 5 films focusing on issues concerning death\, dying\, and mourning practices. Please join us to watch films focusing on issues concerning death\, dying\, and mourning practices. We have selected what we think are interesting\, provocative and entertaining films that invite reflection. After each film there will be time for community discussion. This will be an engaging way for us to learn from each other\, talk about this life cycle\, build community and enjoy different films together. \nJoin us for our second film in this series as we watch Departures\, released in 2008 by Japanese director Yojiro Takita with English subtitles. While this movie does not have specific Jewish content\, there is an overlap and commonality with ritual and tradition in our belief system. \nDaigo Kobayashi is a devoted cellist in an orchestra that has been dissolved and now finds himself without a job. Daigo decides to move back to his old hometown with his wife to look for work and start over. He answers a classified ad entitled “Departures” thinking it is an advertisement for a travel agency only to discover that the job is actually for a “Nokanshi” or “encoffineer\,” a funeral professional who prepares the deceased for burial and entry into the next life. While his wife and others despise the job\, Daigo takes a certain pride in his work and begins to perfect the art of “Nokanshi\,” acting as a gentle gatekeeper between life and death\, between the departed and the family of the departed. This poignant film follows his profound and sometimes comical journey with death as he uncovers the wonder\, joy and meaning of life and living. \nThe remaining films will be offerings are on Sun.\, August 25\, Sun.\, September 22 and Sun.\, October 27 with additional film screenings to be announced at a later time. \nEvent sponsored by Kehilla’s Chevra Kadisha \nFor more information please email ckfilms@kehillasynagogue.org \nLOCATION: In the Sanctuary @ Kehilla \nFor in-person attendance\, please adhere to the COVID Public Health Protocols: \nPlease read the full Kehilla COVID Public Health Protocols here (updated January 1\, 2024).
