VIRTUAL: White Folx Decentering Whiteness Affinity Group Mtg.

October 18 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Please email us for the zoom link: wfdwhitenesscontact@kehillasynagogue.org

Any folks who identify as white, we’d love to have you, whether you’ve ever been to these meetings before or not! We work on de-centering whiteness at Kehilla and in the world — so that Kehilla is a more welcoming synagogue for people of color — and on becoming more aware of our own racism in order to dismantle it. At our meetings, we share feelings, build skills through experiential exercises and discuss actions. We also discuss homework articles and videos, which are encouraged-but-not mandatory, to sharpen our understanding and analysis. These activities help us learn, grow, and build community together, in our work to uproot white supremacy.

Penny Rosenwasser and Maria Lewis are co-facilitating this group.

WFDW Homework for October 18 meeting (highly encouraged but not mandatory)

  1. Short Video about anti-Black racism (2 min.) Thanks to Dee Ward for sending us this.
  2. JOC History Event Recording with Dr. Lewis Ricardo Gordon (about 1.5 hours) — this was the 2nd in our Contemporary & Historical Legacies of Jews of Color Series from this past July. Thanks to Gabriella for suggesting this! (who also worked to make this event happen).

Lewis R. Gordon is an Afro-Jewish (Sephardic & Mizrahi) public intellectual, academic, and musician who has  presented public lectures and musical performances across the globe internationally.  The author of many books, he has received  the Gustavus Myers Award for Outstanding Work on Human Rights & the Eminent Scholar Award from the International Studies Association. His most recent book is Fear of Black Consciousness (Penguin, 2022; Picador, 2023).
