ONLINE: White Folx Decentering Whiteness

Please email Susan Schulman for the Zoom link: susanschulman60@gmail.com.

Any Kehilla connected folks who identify as white, we’d love to have you, whether you’ve ever been to these meetings before or not! We work on de-centering whiteness at Kehilla — so that Kehilla is a more welcoming synagogue for people of color — and on becoming more aware of our own racism in order to dismantle it. At our meetings, we share feelings, build skills through experiential exercises and discuss actions. We also discuss homework articles and videos, which are encouraged-but-not-mandatory, to sharpen our understanding and analysis. These activities help us learn, grow, and build community together, in our work to uproot white supremacy.

Homework for Sept. 14 below: highly encouraged but not mandatory.

Why did our group vote to change our name? People of Color on Kehilla’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Team brought to our attention that our previous name — “Folks with White Privilege” – doesn’t fully define what our group is doing: that we are working towards dismantling white privilege and decentering whiteness, so our name needs to reflect what our group actually represents. Please welcome our new name: White Folx Decentering Whiteness!

 Special Homework Assignment!

Since we are not meeting in August, we’re asking you to take 30 minutes to do an exercise to keep this work fresh for us: below are 7 questions about how anti-blackness lives in us, created by young black Jewish trans leader Graie Hagans.

We are asking you to meet with your buddy – OR with a white friend or family member–before our September 14th meeting – to reflect on and respond to these questions. As part of breaking isolation, PLEASE do this with someone else.

From black trans Jewish leader Graie Hagans:

  1. If I am being honest with myself, how afraid am I of black people?
  2. If I am being honest with myself, how do I feel when black people are loud? If I am being honest with myself, how do I feel when black people are angry ?
  3. How much do I rely on Black labor? Where does Black labor show up in my life? What is my proximity to Black peoples labor?
  4. What is my relationship to black people I know / to black people I don’t know?
  5. If I’m being honest, what do I wish Black folks would do differently? (In elections, protesting, partnership with Jews, etc.)
  6. In what ways have I, as a minority (Jew), benefitted from anti-Black racism?
  7. In what ways does anti-Blackness live inside me?
