Art & Poetry for Peace: Saturday, January 9

Come join us for a special Art show & Reception featuring art created by prisoners from San Quentin: Saturday, January 9, 3:30-6:30pm  (Followed by Poetry Reading at 7pm)

Kehilla is honored to present a show of art created by prisoners from San Quentin. All paintings were created for the “Day of Peace,” an annual event begun approximately five years ago by men at San Quentin in response to violence at San Quentin and in the community. The art reception will be followed by a reading by two poets who have taught within the state prison system at San Quentin and Salinas Valley. Come for one or stay for both events!

Artists Reception is 3:30-6:30pm At 5:30, Kehilla member Carol Newborg, program director for the San Quentin Art Department, will give a brief talk.  The Poetry Reading is 7-9pm.  In the Fireside Room.

As part of our “Art & Poetry for Peace” events, we are honored to host two poets who have taught within the state prison system at San Quentin and Salinas Valley.

Jan - PoetsRose Black currently teaches poetry at Salinas Valley State Prison. Her poetry has been widely published in journals and anthologies.

Jan - PoetJudith Tannenbaum has taught in schools and prisons for decades, serves as training coordinator with SF’s WritersCorps and speaks nationally on prison arts.

$10 donation requested (no one turned away)

We are asking a $10 cover charge for the poetry reading ( no one turned away for lack of funds ). The artist reception is free.
