Why we need to hear Yehuda Shaul & Breaking the Silence

on Saturday, November 23, 7:00pm

BREAKING THE SILENCE

On the evening of the 23rd, I am going to be at Kehilla to listen to Commander Yehuda Shaul of the Israeli Defense Forces, to expose myself to what the Israeli occupation means as experienced by an Israeli soldier who decided to become a dissenter. He helped found “Breaking the Silence,” the organization of Israeli Veterans, who give testimony about their participation in human rights violations, during their service in the Occupied Territories.  They have been exposing the Israeli and American public to the everyday realities of the soldiers controlling the Palestinian population and the Palestinians living under occupation

The soldiers in Breaking the Silence have co-authored a book, Our Harsh Logic: Israeli Soldiers’ Testimony From the Occupied Territories 2000-2010. Before the book was available in the U.S., David Shulman in The New York Review of Books regarded it as “one of the most important on Israel/Palestine in this generation.”

Commander Shaul was raised in an Orthodox family in Jerusalem and joined the IDF after graduating from Yeshiva High School.  He co-founded Breaking the Silence in 2004 with fellow IDF veterans who were troubled by their experiences serving in the territories.

The evening is co-sponsored by the New Israel FundT’ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights; Jewish Voice for Peace.
