The Sanctuary Task Force is thrilled to report that Luis Alberto Escobar has been released from Mesa Verde detention facility (due to Covid-19 risk) and is now sheltering in place with us at Kehilla in our guest suite (formerly Miriam’s Well)! Luis Alberto arrived May 1st and will be with us for a short time until arrangements are made for him to return to Sacramento. A community of organizations have helped make this happen: Pangea Legal Services, Bay Area Immigration Fund, Kern Valley Welcomes Immigrants, and Kern Valley Youth Abolitionists.
Luis Alberto is enjoying the support, visits and meals provided by Kehilla and friends-of-Kehilla volunteers. He told us, “Muchísimas gracias. No sabes lo contento que estoy estar aquí. Me han tratado muy bien.” (“Many thanks. You don’t know how happy i am to be here. You have treated me very well.”)
Huge thanks to: Wren Ganin-Pinto, Harvey Castro, Carol Rothman, Susan Schulman, Rachel Kotok, River Seildeman, Rachel Gottfried, Noa Grayevsky, Yael Falikov, Sam Davis, Amy Bank, Jamie McGrath, Mark Pickus & Donna Caplin — and also Kehilla staff, and members of our Sanctuary Committee: Julie Litwin, Catherine Lyons, Penny Rosenwasser, Anna Martin, and Carolyn Schour. We also thank those who are signed up to help in the coming days, and to ALL of you who have supported our Sanctuary work these past years.
