Taught by Rabbi Gray Myrseth and will focus on a text from Tractate Gittin.
At 700 Benches, we believe that the tools we need to face this challenging moment with courage and creativity can be found in Jewish sacred texts and in the Talmud in particular. This text is profoundly queer—in form if not always in content—and can be seen as both a record of how our ancestors responded to a resounding societal crisis and a sourcebook for how to respond to similar cataclysms in our own time. When we say queer, we mean the creative energy that comes from an experience of marginalization, including (but not limited to) being Jews in the Roman Empire in the 1st century or being part of the LGBTQ community in the 21st century.
Whether you’re a newbie or an expert, we invite you to join us. We’ve saved you a seat.
On Tuesday September 8th, from 5:30-7:30pm (Pacific time), come learn with 700 Benches, a SVARA-method beit midrash (house of study) created in collaboration with Kehilla Community Synagogue (more information about SVARA is at www.svara.org).
In this 2-hour class, you’ll learn an ancient Jewish text in its original language, explore Talmud study as a spiritual practice, and co-create a supportive, queer-normative community of study. All you need to begin is your alef-bet (Hebrew alphabet).
$15-50 sliding scale—no one turned away for inability to pay. Please be in touch to discuss financial aid (email: email@example.com).
