Uncertainty, Peace & Justice: A Passover Journey
The Exodus story demonstrates the folly of too much certainty. The central characters in the story—Pharaoh, God, and eventually Moses—all of them act as if they were certain about where they are and what they will do to ensure the necessary outcomes each of them seeks. In their certainty they fail to consider any alternatives to their chosen line of action. In the process they make slavery, struggle and violence inevitable. As we, through our actions, write the Torah story of our era, do we want a Torah of certainty and hubris, or a Torah of non-violence, justice and peace?
