Jewish History from a World Perspective
Taught by Rabbi David Cooper
This is a whirlwind tour of Jewish History taught in three two-hour sessions as an interactive interruptible monologue.
In many eras of the Jewish experience, history could have unfolded differently and Judaism could have evolved in completely alternate ways if world events had followed a different path. To see the evolutionary potential in each era in its context gives us a better perspective on the unique configuration in which we find ourselves in the 21st century.
In this class, I will explore the alternative Judaisms that each era presented and how each of these Judaisms left a trace in our practice and outlook today. We often take these traces for granted and don’t know about their origin in the distant past. And we don’t see Jewishness as an evolving reality unless we see it in its various permutations over time.
There are recommended readings that you can use if you desire. Hopefully the class will be so interesting that you’ll want to pick up a book and read more about all this.
