NOTE: Kehilla acknowledges that the gold rush also brought about the genocide of the indigenous people of the land we call California. It’s estimated that between 1848 and 1868, 100,000 indigenous people died– about 75% of the population. State and local governments in California offered legal and financial incentives for enslaving and killing indigenous people. As part of our trip, we’ll also honor the indigenous history of the area, and learn more about the experience of native people.
