Kehilla is a community partner for this event, where Keshet and Sha’ar Zahav proudly welcome acclaimed lesbian Jewish poet and writer Leslea Newman to share her beautiful words with our communities. She’ll share from her newest collection, Lovely, as well as revisiting seminal pieces.
Ms. Newman will read and hold time for a Q&A with a reception to follow.
Lesléa Newman has created 70 books for readers of all ages including the poetry collections, I Carry My Mother which received the Golden Crown Literary Society Poetry award, and October Mourning: A Song for Matthew Shepard (novel-in-verse) which received an American Library Association Stonewall Honor. Other titles include the short story collection, A Letter to Harvey Milk; the novel, The Reluctant Daughter; and the children’s books, A Sweet Passover, Here Is The World: A Year of Jewish Holidays, Sparkle Boy, and Ketzel, The Cat Who Composed.
Her honors and awards include poetry fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Massachusetts Artists Foundation, the Association of Jewish Libraries Sydney Taylor Award, and the Massachusetts Book Award. In 2010, she received the Hachamat Lev Award from Keshet for “her enduring commitment to justice and full inclusion for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people in the Jewish community and beyond.” From 2008 – 2010, Ms. Newman served as the poet laureate of Northampton, MA. Currently she is a faculty member of Spalding University’s low-residency MFA in Writing program. Her newest poetry collection, Lovely has just been published.
Accessibility Notes: Sha’ar Zahav is a wheelchair accessible space. There are all-gender restrooms. Keshet and Sha’ar Zahav would like our events to be accessible to those with chemical sensitivities and allergies, and therefore support a fragrance-free environment.
